Creating a linear sequence

Creating a linear sequence.

Making a set of images to create a story over their progression.

Hotel Lobby, by Edward Hopper

Office at Night, by Edward Hopper

After initially looking at the work of Edward Hopper, I was amazed at how subtle and well planned positioning of characters and pose can actually make an image. For example, in the above image, Office at Night. The lady (the secretary) is shuffling through the filing cabinet but her interests clearly lie elsewhere. Her intentions are emphasised by the pose she has adopted (the typical "page 3" pose), which is very suggestive. Furthermore, by the table lamp cleverly jusy covering the boss's finger where a wedding ring would lie, we are left wondering about his marital status. This is something that adds potential further scandal to the image. This single scene tells an entire story.

This approach is realistic, it is a real situation. However, my chosen sequence was based on a work of fiction by Hans Christian Anderson. I felt that the my approach of collage and character based work suited the unusual tale of The Darning Needle and enjoyed the challenge of characterising the main character.
